Digital infrastructure forms the backbone of modern technological advancements. It encompasses the essential physical and virtual components that support information technology, communications, and computing. Digital infrastructure expands access to critical services such as healthcare, education, and financial services, especially in remote or underserved areas. From data centres to cloud services, digital infrastructure is integral to business operations and daily life; increasing the accessibility for investment is critical to improvement.
Tay Cities Digital Theme there are 2 projects: Rural Angus and Rural Perth & Kinross Highspeed Broadband and 5G Digital Testbeds.
5G Digital Testbeds help put full fibre at forefront of 5G deployment to drive economic development. The testbeds are the infrastructure of a data centre, fibre and transmitters. This work has developed practical use of 5G and demonstrate innovation, the potential markets for businesses and the appeal to regional communities. The Tay5G Challenge Fund explores how to use digital connectivity improvements in Dundee, Angus and Perthshire across TV broadcasting, Agritech, sustainable fashion, smart cities, drones for offshore and emergency services, Intelligent transport systems, virtual film production and Justice Tech.
To date all projects within this have realised the following;
- £3.338m Government investment released.
- 293 jobs created or protected.
- £5.186m leverage secured for the region.
Workstream action plan
There are several challenges in deployment of advanced digital networks, and this programme specifically explores those involved in using publicly owned assets, planning to support the roll out of advanced connectivity;
- Work with all telecom’s providers and work with major intervention Project Gigabyte and R100 rollout
- Create the opportunities for investments to deliver private sector investment
- The accelerated rollout of advanced wireless networks, including 5G, will bring benefits to the UK economy and communities across the country
